Denbighshire Technical College

1939 - 1975

Denbighshire Technical College

During the Second World War the Technical Institute became Denbighshire Technical College.

The problems of space had become even worse with the increased demand for technical education from the people of North East Wales, and so earlier plans to expand the college next to the existing Regent Street campus were amended so that a new 28 acre campus next to the Racecourse football ground could be built on.

The foundation stone of Aston College, as it became known, was laid by William Aston, and Saxon Smith and Partners were engaged as architects. The new college was completed and occupied by September 1953 and was officially opened on 11th November 1953 by the Duchess of Gloucester.

Sir Patrick Abercromby, the famous Liverpool-Dublin architect, was responsible for the internal design of the Institute, which featured in a number of Architecture magazines in the early 1950s. Peggy Angus was commissioned to design suitable tiles for the main foyer. These were unique to the College and represent a flow of learning with a Welsh background.

These tiles are still in place today and are protected as a Grade II listing. This means that whenever a tile is damaged our skilled craftsmen and women at the School of Art and Design have to make a replica.
