Glyndŵr University awardsGlyndŵr University's board of governors has taken the decision to provide October 2011’s graduating students with the opportunity to be among the first graduates to receive a Glyndŵr University award. Frequently asked questions1 Did I receive a University of Wales degree or a Glyndŵr University degree in October? The ceremony is an official conferment of your degree. You have received a University of Wales degree (or diploma or certificate) during the ceremony, but it will be possible to receive a Glyndŵr University degree certificate in the future if you would prefer this to a University of Wales certificate. Information on how to do this was sent to the home address of October graduates during the week of 7th November 2011. If you have not received this information, you can print, complete and return this form (pdf format) to register your preference by 5th December 2011. Please ensure that the form is fully completed before you return it. 2 Why is this happening? Glyndŵr University’s board of governors took the decision in 2011 to award Glyndŵr University taught degrees rather than University of Wales taught degrees. This decision followed the University successfully obtaining powers to award its own taught degrees in 2008. The past three years have been important for Glyndŵr University’s development as an independent and autonomous University of influence and significance in the North East Wales region, Wales and internationally. Since obtaining degree-awarding powers (TDAP) in 2008, we have progressed to put this into practice confidently, and fully exercise the right to award our own taught degrees. The students who graduated in October 2011 are some of the first ever enrolled Glyndŵr University students and we believe it is fitting to offer these graduates the opportunity to receive Glyndŵr University awards. All students starting taught programmes at the University in future will be enrolled on programmes leading to Glyndŵr University awards. 3 What is happening at the University of Wales? Changes are taking place at the University of Wales, with plans for the University of Wales to merge with Trinity St David and Swansea Metropolitan Universities to form a new university. The new university will award University of Wales: Trinity St David degrees. Please see the University of Wales press statement here. 4 I wish to transfer to a Glyndŵr University degree (or diploma or certificate); what is the difference? Your programme of study was designed, delivered and assessed by Glyndŵr University staff. This programme of study has been validated and approved by both University of Wales and Glyndwr University, therefore enabling you to receive a choice of awards. 5 I wish to transfer to a Glyndŵr University award - will I have another graduation ceremony? No, the graduation ceremonies that took place in October 2011 were a celebration of your achievement, organised by Glyndŵr University. It will be possible to arrange future photographs, from 2012, in Glyndŵr University gowns. 6 Can I choose to receive a Glyndŵr University award? You can choose to receive a Glyndŵr University award if you qualified from one of the following programmes: Diploma of Higher Education; Certificate of Higher Education; Foundation degree; Bachelors degree; PGCE; Certificate in Education; Graduate Certificate; Graduate Diploma; Postgraduate Certificate; Postgraduate Diploma; Masters degree (MA; MSc; MBA; MPH; MTh; MRes). 7 What is the status of a Glyndŵr University degree? The Glyndŵr University degree has the same status as a degree from any other University in the UK. Glyndŵr University was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council in 2008. You can see here that Glyndŵr University is one of the Recognised Bodies which have their own UK degree awarding powers from the list of Recognised Bodies published by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills 8 Do I need to consult my sponsor before choosing to receive a Glyndŵr University degree? It is advisable to consult your sponsor. Experience at other institutions suggests that some sponsors who have sponsored a student to receive a University of Wales award would be concerned about a student receiving a different award in its place. If you cannot get a response from your sponsor before the university period for confirming which award you wish to receive closes, please contact awards@glyndwr.ac.uk 9 I have received an HND/HNC. Can I choose to receive a Glyndŵr University award? No, the awarding body for Higher Nationals is Edexcel, and this will not change. 10 I received a research degree (MPhil; PhD; Professional Doctorate). Can I choose to receive a Glyndŵr University award? The validating body for research degrees is still the University of Wales, so there is not an option to receive a Glyndŵr University award. 11 If I lose my degree certificate, can I get a new one? And will the replacement be a Glyndŵr University degree? It will be possible to receive a replacement certificate. University of Wales will continue to issue replacement degree certificates for graduates who received a University of Wales degree. If you choose a Glyndŵr University award, then you would be able to obtain a replacement certificate from Glyndŵr University. 12 Is there a deadline for choosing to receive a Glyndŵr University award? Yes. If we do not get a response from you by 5 December 2011, you will be sent a University of Wales certificate in week commencing 12 December. 13 When would I receive a Glyndŵr University certificate? As soon as it has been confirmed that your University of Wales award has been revoked, Glyndŵr University will write to you to confirm that you have qualified for an award from Glyndŵr University. Glyndŵr University certificates will be issued early in 2012. |
