It is no surprise that computing specialists are in high demand, computers and computing technology are now part of almost everything we do.

The impact computers have on every aspect of our lives has deepened dramatically over recent years, with the growth of the internet and mobile
communications driving change. Computers are now used within virtually every business, industry and organisation.

This course was developed to fulfil a recognised need for more computer specialists who can develop computer software and design or maintain computer systems. Studying Applied Computing, you will develop a number of practical skills which are useful in any field of business, such as how to use information technology effectively as well understanding specialised software.

You will also learn how to research, analyse and present your ideas. As you progress through the course you will gain invaluable skills for your future career, including self-motivation, time management, problem solving, database and project management.

Course content

BSc (Hons) Applied Computing

Our courses focus on a foundation of ‘core computing’ and introduce you to software development and database design with elements of communication networks and the Internet. This broad base of knowledge is supported by robust professional skills that are vital to teamwork, problem-solving and career development. In the later stages you develop more specialised abilities in areas that best fit your career aspirations.

Assessment

Assessment is seen as an integral part of learning and assessment criteria are linked to individual module learning outcomes. Assessment methods include practical assessments, reports and essays, analysis of case studies, oral presentations, seminar papers, project work, Personal Development Portfolio, examinations and unseen class tests. Assessment will involve both individual and group / team-based assignments.

The general requirement for the honours degree is 240 UCAS points at A level or equivalent. In addition applicants must have five GCSE passes at grades A, B or C including Mathematics and English. See information on general entry requirements.

FdSc Applied Computing

This course is practical in nature and aims to provide you with the basic underpinning theory and knowledge of computer systems and to prepare you for employment as a Computing Practitioner. It will give you opportunities to understand the nature and principles of business processes and to gain direct experience of them.

On the Applied Computing courses you have the opportunity to tailor your own course from modules available within the University’s other computing degrees to meet your personal interests and career aspirations.

Assessment

Assessment is through individual and team coursework together with the demonstration of competence in the delivery of practical work and projects.
