Counselling and Psychotherapy

Diploma of Higher Education in Person-Centred and Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy

Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling Studies

In an exciting new initiative, the Welsh Assembly Government has published a National Strategy for bringing counsellors into all Welsh schools. Responding to this challenge - and to the demand for greater professionalisation of counselling and psychotherapy in Britain - Glyndŵr University is offering a number of new courses.

Our courses are fully grounded in the person-centred approach to give you the ability to provide empathic, authentic relationships which will develop effective therapeutic interaction.

The delivery and content of the courses are based on a contemporary understanding of the theory and practice of Carl Rogers and of his colleague - the philosopher, clinician, and theorist - Eugene T. Gendlin. In addition, play and expressive therapy are covered in light of person-centred practice and theory, criticisms are considered, and attention is paid to such current developments as:

  • the relationship between counselling and spirituality;
  • conceptions of process and how these relate to the medical model;
  • and the therapeutic importance of tenderness.

Experiential focusing is taught and encouraged as an aid to your own developing awareness and something that you might introduce into your clinical practice.

Overall, the course prepares you for your clinical placements and eventual employment working with young people and with adults in agency, educational or more entrepreneurial settings.

Key facts

  • The Diploma will prepare you to work with young people and adults, within institutions and through self-employment
  • Clinical placements are an important part of the courses
  • The first year of study alone will provide an introduction to counselling and to real listening. Anyone not seeking a full professional training in counselling and psychotherapy has opportunity to earn a Certificate of Higher Education which will be an asset anywhere within the broader field of human services
