Environmental Science

BSc (Hons) Environmental Science

Minimising pollution and how to make the best use of renewable energy sources is the focus of this degree. Providing a solid grounding in chemistry, ecology, earth and the environment, and exploring ecosystems and biology through real-life conservation projects.

People and organisations across the world are seeing the need to achieve a sustainable future. But whilst some progress has been made there is still much to do in terms of minimising the use of non-renewable resources, minimising pollution, and maximising the use of recycling and renewable resources.

Through your studies you will develop an advanced level of awareness of environmental issues, as well as skills in information retrieval and management.

You will also undertake group work which will   help you to develop team-working skills, and individual projects to develop self-reliance and practice in project management.

Course content

BSc (Hons) Environmental Science

As well as gaining a basic grounding in chemistry and laboratory skills you will cover a range of topics including ecology and biodiversity, environmental and earth systems, and learn about environmental surveys. Later in the course you will explore ecosystems, pollution issues, sustainability and resource management, conservation biology and atmospherics as well as developing practical skills in research and field methods, data analysis and practical conservation.

Career opportunities

Almost every business and local authority requires environmental professionals. Environmental science graduates build careers in:

  • conservation organisations
  • local authority countryside services or planning departments
  • the recycling industry
  • environmental consultancy
  • graduates also chose to undertake further study, for example in specific areas such as forestry or water resource management.

Assessment

You will be assessed through coursework and exams. Coursework will include laboratory and fieldwork reports, poster presentations and essays.
