English language support
The Second Language Learning Centre
The Second Language Learning Centre provides in-sessional English language support throughout the academic year to all international and European students. Students are required to take a short diagnostic English language test at the beginning of their studies, and seminar groups are established on students’ prior knowledge of English and their specific academic needs.
A prepared and purpose designed curriculum is followed on a validated academic module, and on successful completion students will gain 20 HE credits and a University Certificate of Continuing Education. Tuition will be offered in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) on this English language programme for specific academic purposes; and all skills will be assessed in the course of the module (pass mark is 40%).
It is therefore important that students attend their classes regularly to enhance their knowledge of academic English in order to gain maximum benefit from studying on their chosen degree programme, and at the same time to obtain a certificate for undertaking an English language programme.
The Second Language Learning Centre also offers a pre-sessional English language programme for international students who require additional Academic English language skills prior to embarking on their main academic programme at Glyndŵr University. The pre-sessional programme runs in August/September prior to the start of the academic year. Admission to this programme is via the International Office together with an application to a main degree programme.
The Centre furthermore offers an intensive English language programme in connection with the European Summer School in July. Admission to this programme is via application to the appropriate Summer School.
Students who already follow the Academic English programme and wish to gain improved skills in general English may find it useful to enrol on the Centre’s additional English language programme (English for Professional Purposes) which is offered throughout the academic year, at levels from Lower Intermediate to Upper Intermediate. The classes will also be a good preparation for an external examination (e.g. IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL, Trinity). On successful completion students will be awarded 20 HE credits and a University Certificate of Continuing Education. Admission to the programme is via the Second Language Learning Centre (l.luukkovinchenzo@glyndwr.ac.uk)
