Youth and Community Studies

BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work

Policy frameworks including Communities First, and The National Youth Service Strategy for Wales, as well as Aiming high for young people, Neighbourhood Renewal and Youth Matters in England have combined to place youth and community work at the heart of current government policies.

Seeking to improve work with young people, excluded groups and communities, these changes have been accompanied by a massive investment creating numerous new initiatives and projects within the statutory, voluntary and community sectors.

Some of the key skills you will develop on this course are advanced forms of communication, information technology and teamwork which will enhance your personal development. With an unprecedented demand for people with youth and community qualifications, these courses will give you a professional qualification and professional status.

This course will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of youth and community work, including the establishment of core skills and values, the development and delivery of informal education opportunities and exploring policy and management processes in service delivery.

With an emphasis on anti oppressive practise and the development of critically reflective practitioners our undergraduate course ensures a progressive curriculum is supported by dedicated tutors and a new virtual learning environment

You will study a variety of modules that reflect the changing nature of youth and community work practice. Modules include Understanding Society, Developing and Managing Reflective Practice, Creative Skills for Engagement and Leading and Developing Informal Education. You will gain a greater understanding of youth culture and examine the National Occupational Standards for Youth Work.

As a core element of the degree you will undertake a substantial practical component. Professional placements are undertaken with UK employers though students have done placements across Europe in previous years.
