Kieron Lewis

Glyndŵr University’s Theatre and Performance degree isn’t just for aspiring actors and directors.

There’s a lot to be learnt about the technical side of working in theatre, something which third year Kieron Lewis has been keen to tap into.

“The reward I get from seeing a stage set-up, creating an atmosphere for the production and being able to help create a scene for actors and to take the stage on really drives me on,” says Kieron. “I’ve been given the chance to focus on doing sound, lighting and building sets for all of the plays that we’ve produced and performed. I’m hoping to work as a technician, rather than an actor, when I graduate, so it’s been a great experience for me.”

“The course has given me the freedom to look at theatre and theatre productions in so many different ways. If you’re going to go into the technical side of theatre you don’t just need the relevant technical skills – you need a good knowledge of all aspects of working in theatre and I’ve learnt that here.”

It was a spur of the moment decision that brought 27-year-old Kieron, from Chester, to studying higher education – and one that he looks back on with few regrets.

“I did a BTEC in Performing Arts seven years ago and then I worked in financial services and insurance for a while. But I wanted to pick up my interest in theatre again and Glyndwr University was an ideal place for me to do that.

“I’ve had lots of great individual support, care and concern from all the staff here. They always take time out of their lives to make sure that you’re happy with your university experience.”
